We conclude today our three-part series:
Life's Gifts and Life's Tragedies - Making sense of it all
So many 'bad' things happen to good people. What's "up" here? What's this all about? How does the spiritual student make sense out of Life's gifts and Life's tragedies?
As it happens (there are no coincidences in the Universe) I am hard at work now on the biography of Barbara Marx Hubbard, a futurist and visionary of the first rank, and a woman who is changing the way we think it is to be human. In the chapter I am just finishing, I tell the story of how Barbara found out about the life-threatening (and, ultimately, life-ending) illness of her son, Wade. I should like to dip into a little of that writing here, because it is right on point....
Okay...from the book, then...which is titled THE MOTHER OF INVENTION: The Legacy of Barbara Marx Hubbard and the Future of You....
OCTOBER 2005:
Barbara is being driven by a dear friend, Carolyn Anderson, to Palm Springs, where she is to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Global New Thought, and will deliver a major address in the form of her acceptance speech.
It's a beautiful day and Barbara is enjoying the drive and the good conversation with Carolyn. Their lively exchange is interrupted by Barbara's cell phone.
"Mom, it's Wade."
"Wade! How are you, darling? I'm just on my way to Palm Springs to-"
-"Mom, I've received some interesting news."
Barbara does not miss the concern in her child's voice. "About what, sweetheart?" There was the slightest pause. "About what?"
"I've just been diagnosed with a major tumor." Barbara caught her breath. "They say it's fatal, but I don't believe it."
"Oh, Wade...where is it?"
"It's a brain tumor, Mom. They call it glioblastoma."
Barbara did not know it then, but in the medical profession they describe this condition with three words: Death Upon Diagnosis. Untreated, the average patient lives three months. With treatment, one to two years. Wikipedia says that the single most prevalent symptom is a progressive memory, personality, or neurological deficit due to temporal and frontal lobe involvement. Shortly, Wade began exhibiting all three. At this point, though, none of that was happening. Wade sounded perfectly fine on the other end of the phone-and very determined.
"I want that tumor out," he said.
Barbara told him that of course she would support him, and do everything in her power to see him victorious in the battle that both knew lay ahead.
Wade hung up and Barbara told her friend at the wheel what she'd just heard. "Oh, dear," Carolyn continued her drive in a deeply pensive mood. Within hours Barbara was to speak on the potential of humanity, and now she would do it knowing that her own son was threatened with death. If he had been in any immediate danger she would have canceled the appearance and raced to his side. But this was not the case, and they both knew it. So she pushed ahead and made the presentation-though what was anticipated as a light-hearted and thoroughly joyous occasion became for Barbara a very challenging evening.
She did not elaborate in her talk about Wade's circumstance, but she re-framed her remarks in the context of tragedies that are occurring in the lives of so many people in so many ways, at the same time that so many new possibilities are being born.
"Concurrent realities, I call them. They create the terrible dichotomies within which so many people now live," she told her audience. "The only way that anyone could hold a positive vision of the future would be to see our present-day circumstance in spiritual terms."
She paused for a moment, clearing emotion from her throat. "Many are dealing on this day with tragedy, pain, and suffering. And life invites us to call up the deepest faith, an inner `knowing,' that crisis precedes transformation, that problems are evolutionary drivers, and that there is nothing that happens that does not have a greater meaning."
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
What Barbara told her audience that night has struck me ever since she shared it with me. It echoes for me the wisdom I found in Conversations with God. It can be very useful for us to see that we are "brightening" and "burning" at the same, as I wrote in my analogy here last week. In that previous installment I asked:
"Can a flame be said to be suffering because it is extinguishing itself even as it illumins? Each illumination of the flame is the result of its own `burning up.' Is the burning up, then, less perfect than the illumination?"
The truth is, we are living (just as Barbara says) "concurrent realities."
Even as our flame burns to extinction, we brighten everything around us. CwG says, "Pain is pain. `Suffering' is our thought about it." When we see the events of our lives as All leading to our own evolution and the evolution of our species, we begin to, as CwG says, "see the perfection."
This is another thing that it is important to remember. We are not only "evolving" our Selves, we are "evolving" the entire human race. What we are doing, we are doing not only for us, but for every other living member of our species. What we are going through, we are going through not only for us, but for all other people. We are creating "memes," we are producing data, we are sending information into the pool of collective consciousness from which every sentient being extracts its knowingness. I want to speak more about this next week, because this idea of us all working for the rest of humanity is not one that is widely discussed or explored, but I think it should be.
For now, let me end this three-part series with this observation: Everything "bad" that is occurring---from the earthquake in Chile to the terrible explosion in the mine in West Virginia---is part of a Larger Process by which All of Life evolves. I know that it is very difficult to see that "silver lining" when you are one of the people whose husband or wife or child died in one of those tragedies...and so I also want to talk next week or in future weeks just ahead about the process of grieving, and how that can be affected and facilitated by moving to higher and higher levels of spiritual awareness.
So we have much to discuss in the weeks ahead. Stay tuned. Until next we meet here, I would like to leave you with a bit of poetry from my wife, Em Claire...
Whatever It Was
It is your own life that you desire to cherish
like one brings the downy tuft of a Dandelion to the lips
blows softly
prays
to give everything away
keep
only what remains
of a life well lived
a life well loved
nourished and blessed
by the suns and by the soils
and by whatever it was
that
finally
Opened You.

Last week I had a conversation with a good friend who shared a smart (and effective) exercise she uses to re-center herself when she gets her buttons pushed. As I listened to her describe the process, I knew I had to share it with you.
The next time you get your buttons pushed and you find yourself fixated on a negative experience, in the middle of a shame attack, or ruminating about something that's upset you, try this. Take out four pieces of paper and put one of the following four sentence stems on the top of each sheet:
1. I know I'm acting in alignment with my Highest Self when I...
2. The things that knock me out of alignment are...
3. When I'm out of alignment, the behaviors I engage in are...
4. The best actions for me to take to get back in line with my Highest Self are...
Once you have each sentence stem listed on a separate piece of paper, set aside twenty minutes to do a "mind dump" for each category. List lots of examples for each one. What do you do when you're at your best? How do you think? What actions do you take? What kinds of situations knock you off track? And then, what habits or behaviors do you engage in that keep you off track and feeling stuck? Finally, what do you do that helps you to re-center so you can get back in alignment with your Highest Self?
I intended to give you examples for each category but, after doing the exercise myself, I discovered that it's better not to have any preconceived ideas. They interfere with the process. So, let yourself go, write down whatever thoughts or ideas come to mind, and when you're done, I'm sure you'll learn something valuable about yourself. I know I did. I'll give you a way to share your experience in this week's Take Action Challenge. Have fun!
Don't wait to get your buttons pushed before doing this exercise. Instead, give yourself the gift of twenty minutes and use what you learn to respond differently the next time you're faced with a challenge. I'll post each individual sentence stem on my facebook page this week and invite you to share your ideas. But, don't look until you've done the exercise yourself . And be sure to use what you learn to keep yourself empowered and on track!
This week's video is of the first woman on Rolling Stone's Guitar God list. I may have shared it long ago in a newsletter, but it's worth seeing again. She's fantastic! If you loved the movie August Rush, you'll recognize the playing style. Enjoy! You'll find it here.

Dear Ones,
Today is a day of joy, is it not? Spring has arrived for many of you and joy has returned for most of you. Some of you are perhaps thinking that you are not feeling joy – and such might be the case for your physical being. But your inner being/soul most certainly is.
You may not be aware on a physical level that a giant Universal shift has occurred in the last few days, but such is the case. We have told you baby boomers that you have accepted, and in fact, have been instrumental in introducing the New Age on earth. What occurred most recently is that the majority of people on earth have now embraced the possibility. There is a great deal of difference from the introduction of a new product to general acceptance.
An appropriate example might be yogurt. Forty years ago, very few people were familiar with the term or the food. Of course, those familiar with a variety of cultures might have been knowledgeable about this particular food, but the general population did not conceive of yogurt as a standard lunch or snack treat. Today, no one needs to have yogurt defined.
When we initiated this blog last fall, we told you that the New Age had been introduced, which was similar to stating that yogurt is a new food product that you might like. What has occurred in the last few days is that the New Age has become general information to the inner beings of humans now on earth and therefore, the Universe.
What does such a statement mean in terms of your interactions with others or in the political, religious and economic arenas? Nothing immediately. Yogurt did not because a household product overnight – but “word of mouth” most certainly generated yogurt sales that today are far beyond what anyone would have imagined thirty years ago. And so it is for the New Age.
Humans continue to live in strife. They continue to protest this or that action. They continue to think that candidate or political party is evil. But there is now a message, accepted by the vast majority of humans, who find a greater need for cooperation and love than hate and anger.
What has occurred in the last few days is a dramatic sea change that will impact the earth for the remainder of time.
We and others have told you for some time that your inner voice is your most appropriate and truly only guide. Many of you embraced such messages to the best of your ability, despite chiding from friends and relatives for doing so. Following your inner guidance has become mainstream.
The vast majority of people on earth have now accepted the worth and the necessity of the New Age. By doing so, those now on earth will have a more difficult time overriding their personal New Age messages. Of course, there will be a number at first who are able to do so despite their deeply uncomfortable feelings. But the majority will no longer be able to ignore New Age.
Many of you are perhaps thinking of the current political scene in the United States. The deep divide between the Republicans and the Democrats. Or the seemingly constant terrorist threats around the world. Will either example cease to exist tomorrow? No. But such will happen within a few months. We have told you that the New Age will occur rapidly. And so it will.
Once someone’s soul/inner being accepts a philosophy that impacts the Universe, there is very little needed to move that philosophy forward.
Again, let us give you an example. You baby boomers in the 1960’s and 1970’s wanted love not war. The Vietnam war was raging and technically you had little power given your age and your income levels. Yet, through the resources you had available, you stopped the Vietnam war. Oh not in one day. And often, you felt the effort was futile. Who would listen to a bunch of radical youngsters? Of course, the rest is history.
This New Age shift will happen even more rapidly because it was initiated by the very same baby boomers. Only now you baby boomers are the people in power and have the largest bulk of financial worth in history.
Let us give you a brief overview of what is going to happen in the next few months. Then we will leave you with the thought that it is now time for you to celebrate. Once again, you have completed a very difficult task and you have done so without a shot being fired or any type of revolution other than one enmeshed with love.
You baby boomers are already comfortable with the thought of “make love not war.” Just as was true for you in the 1960’s and 1970’s, you are feeling thoughts that you are not familiar with. Those thoughts are urging you forward to disassemble those institutions and organizations and yes, even political parties that do not seem to “get it.” You are sending e-mails and creating blogs that encourage yourself and others to look at those institutions with new eyes. Just because someone you admire says something, does not mean that statement is your reality any longer. And so it will go. You will be more and more interested in surrounding yourself with like-minded people and institutions. Those people and institutions who do not act on your “love not war” philosophy will fade and fail.
We are not necessarily addressing the war in Iraq or any other conflict. But rather an overall philosophy of negotiation, hope, joy and yes, peace. That is the New Age. This is what you have long dreamed of. And this is what you have now created both within yourself and within the beings of the majority of people on earth.
Even though you may not yet have experienced it directly as of yet, we will tell you that your joy will start bursting forth with or without your current willingness to believe that such is so. Of course, there will yet be upheavals. Of course, there will conflicts for a bit of time. But underneath it all, know without a doubt that the majority of people on earth have accepted the New Age and all that entails.
Follow your inner voice and you will be a participant observer in the paradigm shift that is now occurring. Ignore your inner voice and you will be an observer in the paradigm shift that is now occurring. It will happen. It is happening.
For those of you who prefer an example of what we are discussing, think of the last few weeks as the time in which a major food producer first decided to introduce yogurt as a small product line. And then know, as you do, that within a couple of years, every major food producer will have to have a large yogurt product line to meet the demand. And so it is. Amen.
Ah. Brenda has a question. What if the majority of people had not accepted the New Age in the last few days? Nothing would have changed other than the introduction and acceptance of the New Age would have taken a bit longer in your terms and a few nanoseconds in ours. The New Age has been a given for a few years. Your acceptance was the question which has now been answered.
Go play in the sunshine and rejoice in your concentrated and highly successful implementation of a new world. So be it. Amen.
