Hubble’s ‘Einstein Cross’ Marks the Space-Warping Spot

One hundred years after Albert Einstein published his theory of general relativity, the Hubble Space Telescope has provided a demonstration of the theory at work: a picture of a distant galaxy so massive that its gravitational field is bending the light from an even more distant supernova.

The image, released Thursday, shows how the flash from the supernova's blast has been warped into four points of light surrounding an elliptical galaxy in a cluster called MACS J1149.2+2223, which is 5 billion light-years away in the constellation Leo.

"It really threw me for a loop when I spotted the four images surrounding the galaxy," Patrick Kelly, an astronomer from the University of California at Berkeley, said in a news release. "It was a complete surprise."

Maybe it shouldn't have been. The configuration is known as an Einstein Cross. It's a well-known but rarely seen effect of gravitational lensing, which is in line with Einstein's assertion that a massive object warps the fabric of space-time — and thus warps the path taken by light rays around the object.

In this case, the light rays are coming from a stellar explosion that's directly behind the galaxy, but 4.3 million light-years more distant. Computer models suggest that the four-pointed cross will eventually fade away, to be followed within the next five years by the reappearance of the supernova's flash as a single image.

Kelly is part of a research collaboration known as the Grism Lens Amplified Survey from Space, or GLASS. The collaboration is working with the Frontier Field Supernova team, or FrontierSN, to analyze the exploding star. He's also the lead author of a paper on the phenomenon that's being published this week by the journal Science as part of a package marking the 100th anniversary of Einstein's general relativity theory.

The researchers suggest that a high-resolution analysis of the gravitational lensing effect can lead to better measurements of cosmic distances and galactic masses, including the contribution from dark matter. The Hubble team says the faraway supernova has been named "Refsdal" in honor of Norwegian astronomer Sjur Refsdal, who proposed using time-delayed images from a lensed supernova to study the expansion of the universe.

"Astronomers have been looking to find one ever since," UCLA astronomer Tommaso Treu, the GLASS project's principal investigator, said in Thursday's news release. "The long wait is over!"

The Einstein Cross is the subject of a Google+ Hangout at 3 p.m. ET Thursday, presented by the Hubble science team. You can watch the event now or later via YouTube. Check out a preprint version of the Science report.

Bees Do It, Humans Do It ~ Bees can experience false memories, scientists say

Excerpt from csmonitor.com

Researchers at Queen Mary University of London have found the first evidence of false memories in non-human animals.

It has long been known that humans – even those of us who aren't famous news anchors – tend to recall events that did not actually occur. The same is likely true for mice: In 2013, scientists at MIT induced false memories of trauma in mice, and the following year, they used light to manipulate mice brains to turn painful memories into pleasant ones.

Now, researchers at Queen Mary University of London have shown for the first time that insects, too, can create false memories. Using a classic Pavlovian experiment, co-authors Kathryn Hunt and Lars Chittka determined that bumblebees sometimes combine the details of past memories to form new ones. Their findings were published today in Current Biology.
“I suspect the phenomenon may be widespread in the animal kingdom," Dr. Chittka said in a written statement to the Monitor.
First, Chittka and Dr. Hunt trained their buzzing subjects to expect a reward if they visited two artificial flowers – one solid yellow, the other with black-and-white rings. The order didn’t matter, so long as the bee visited both flowers. In later tests, they would present a choice of the original two flower types, plus one new one. The third type was a combination of the first two, featuring yellow-and-white rings. At first, the bees consistently selected the original two flowers, the ones that offered a reward.

But a good night’s sleep seemed to change all that. One to three days after training, the bees became confused and started incorrectly choosing the yellow-and-white flower (up to fifty percent of the time). They seemed to associate that pattern with a reward, despite having never actually seen it before. In other words, the bumblebees combined the memories of two previous stimuli to generate a new, false memory.

“Bees might, on occasion, form merged memories of flower patterns visited in the past,” Chittka said. “Should a bee unexpectedly encounter real flowers that match these false memories, they might experience a kind of deja-vu and visit these flowers expecting a rich reward.”

Bees have a rather limited brain capacity, Chittka says, so it’s probably useful for them to “economize” by storing generalized memories instead of minute details.

“In bees, for example, the ability to learn more than one flower type is certainly useful,” Chittka said, “as is the ability to extract commonalities of multiple flower patterns. But this very ability might come at the cost of bees merging memories from multiple sequential experiences.”

Chittka has studied memory in bumblebees for two decades. Bees can be raised and kept in a lab setting, so they make excellent long-term test subjects.

“They are [also] exceptionally clever animals that can memorize the colors, patterns, and scents of multiple flower species – as well as navigate efficiently over long distances,” Chittka said.

In past studies, it was assumed that animals that failed to perform learned tasks had either forgotten them or hadn’t really learned them in the first place. Chittka’s research seems to show that animal memory mechanisms are much more elaborate – at least when it comes to bumblebees.

“I think we need to move beyond understanding animal memory as either storing or not storing stimuli or episodes,” Chittka said. “The contents of memory are dynamic. It is clear from studies on human memory that they do not just fade over time, but can also change and integrate with other memories to form new information. The same is likely to be the case in many animals.”

Chittka hopes this study will lead to a greater biological understanding of false memories – in animals and humans alike. He says that false memories aren’t really a “bug in the system,” but a side effect of complex brains that strive to learn the big picture and to prepare for new experiences.

“Errors in human memory range from misremembering minor details of events to generating illusory memories of entire episodes,” Chittka said. “These inaccuracies have wide-ranging implications in crime witness accounts and in the courtroom, but I believe that – like the quirks of information processing that occur in well known optical illusions – they really are the byproduct of otherwise adaptive processes.”

“The ability to memorize the overarching principles of a number of different events might help us respond in previously un-encountered situations,” Chittka added. “But these abilities might come at the expense of remembering every detail correctly.”
So, if generating false memories goes hand in hand with having a nervous system, does all this leave Brian Williams off the hook?

“It is possible that he conflated the memories,” Chittka said, “depending on his individual vulnerability to witnessing a traumatic event, plus a possible susceptibility to false memories – there is substantial inter-person variation with respect to this. It is equally possible that he was just ‘showing off’ when reporting the incident, and is now resorting to a simple lie to try to escape embarrassment. That is impossible for me to diagnose.”

But if Mr. Williams genuinely did misremember his would-be brush with death, Chittka says he shouldn’t be vilified.

“You cannot morally condemn someone for reporting something they think really did happen to them,” Chittka said. “You cannot blame an Alzheimer patient for forgetting to blow out the candle, even if they burn down the house as a result. In the same way, you can't blame someone who misremembers a crime as a result of false memory processes."

Most Time Travel is a Small Segment of the Totality of You

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 02:08 PM PDT

Channeled by Brenda Hoffman for Life Tapestry Creations.com

Dear Ones,

What a day! Many of you are probably feeling as if your being has been scrambled. And so it has. This full moon is merely an indicator of what will be shifting within your society in the next few weeks.

Does it not appear as if everyone is angry? Is there not a great deal of shame and blame floating very close to the surface? Many of you are confused. We continue to discuss the joys of the New Age and yet you feel as if you are surrounded with the pain of the Old Age.  Do not fret – all is well.

Please remember that we access a different perspective than you currently allow yourself to experience. You limit your view to the narrow stream of your current life rather than the totality of your being.

Many of you are quite interested in time travel – but even time travel is a small microcosm of the totality that is you. Let us explain. The totality that is you has had many experiences on earth, as well as other realms. If you believe and thereby expect to only access the existences you have had on earth, you will not be able to “see” your lives between your earth existences or your lives in other locals. You will be limited to what you expect to see and/or experience.

There are so many other exciting arenas to explore. You are fully capable of exploring your lives on earth in whatever historical perspective you wish, your lives between your earth experiences and your lives in other arenas. Such exploration is yet another tool in your new tool kit.

As is true of the tools we have mentioned previously, your time travel tool has always been available – just much more difficult for you to access.  A bit like the difference between a canvas airplane of the early 1900s and a jet. Both are capable of transporting you through the air, but the jet is so much faster and more comfortable.

Now what does time travel (we prefer the term, Experience Travel) have to do with the anger and rage displayed throughout your current world via the media? Everything and nothing. From a larger perspective, the small squabbles you are learning about are mere blips on the screen of life.

If you remember, many predicted that the end of the world you now know it – the introduction of the New Age – would occur in a cataclysm of some sort – perhaps a nuclear war or a similar catastrophe. Instead, this New Age transition is occurring without a world cataclysm, war or revolution. In comparison to those predictions, this transition is and has been extremely gentle. There is, of course, vocal dissent and civil unrest in various parts of the world, but certainly not to extent that was predicted even a few years ago.

If you would allow yourself to Experience Travel to a view above, or perhaps a better term, through your current perspective, you would note how easy this New Age transition has been and will continue to be. The naysayers will fade and those who wish to explore the New Age will move to the forefront. “Life is Good” is an extremely appropriate term for this transition.

Some of you may experience a more dramatic transition than others. That is your choice. But again, we will tell you that such pain is not necessary. Allow yourself to see the positive aspects of any and all situations and you will soon find that your life is truly joyous.

But then, as you have learned from several channels including this one, if you continue to “beat the drum” of pain and anger that is what you will draw to you – not to the earth or the Universe, but to you. The difference between you believing that “life is painful and then you die” prior to the New Age and after the New Age is that it was possible to achieve a world filled with pain interspersed with joy prior to the New Age. Now it is only possible for you to achieve that vision for yourself.

The world and the Universe have moved on – in large part due to your subconscious efforts. It is now your choice whether you wish to follow the joy of the New Age or to remain behind in the pain of the Old Age.

It is also your choice to tap into your Experience Travel capabilities. Or to worry about this or that issue. Or if you wish to experience a personal life of joy, while others on earth are allowing themselves to continue their life of pain.

Your new tool kit is no different from your computer commands. If you wish to correct your spelling errors in a computer project, you merely have to select spell check – but you are certainly not forced to. And so it is with your tool kit.

As we continue these blogs, we will provide more explicit tool kit operating instructions. For the time being, we are merely pointing out the features of your new tool kit – not the least of which is your ability to easily implement your Experience Travel skills.

Use your new tool kit or not. Experience Travel or not. Live in joy or not. The New Age is about choice, as well as an expansion of your being. All of which or none of which is required for you to continue living on earth.

But to not believe or access some of the multitude of skills that you now have readily available is similar to those people who discounted the value of flight with the statement, “If God meant for me to fly, he would have given me wings.” So be it. Amen.
