As the sun came up Friday morning, my heart felt heavy. I sensed something significant had happened on a world scale and braced myself as I got online to check the news.

In near-disbelief, I read about the terror that gripped Colorado overnight into the morning hours on Friday as a young gunman carried out his lethal rampage in a suburban Denver movie theater. Simultaneously, my mind flashed on images of the destructive wildfires that raged in the same state less than a month ago. The incident also reopened wounds from the horrific Columbine school shooting in 1999. At that time, I lived close enough to Littleton to feel how the spirit of that community and Colorado at large had been devastated by one terrorist act. Now this.
