Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. Chinese Proverb

My candle burns at both ends; It will not last the night; But, ah, my foes, and oh, my friends— It gives a lovely light. Edna St. Vincent Millay
We must view young people not as empty bottles to be filled, but as candles to be lit. Robert H. Shaffer
Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning. William A. Ward
How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a naughty world. William Shakespeare
October's new Moon occurs on October 27 in Australia and October 26 in the United States. The Sabian Symbol is very interesting in the light of the fact that it falls just a few days before Halloween. The Symbol is Scorpio 4: A Youth Holding A Lighted Candle In A Devotional Ritual Gains A Sense Of The Great 'Other World'. This so reflects Halloween in so many ways, and it's fascinating to note that a very intuitive, psychic degree is the degree of the Sun every year on Halloween. It's Scorpio 8: The Silvery Moon Shining Across A Beautiful Gem Of A Lake. We see many images of Halloween with the moon shining across a beautiful, still, reflective body of water. Of course, that 'Great Other World' is largely what Halloween is about. The following is from my book – The Sabian Oracle: 360 Degrees Of Wisdom –
Your situation may require a fresh attitude in order to create room for new developments and a renewed sense of vitality. You may be feeling a sense of loneliness and alienation. Any form of light, perhaps a ‘Candle’ or a torch, needs to be shed on the dark corners of one’s mind. Try to focus on those things that bring you a sense of love and fulfillment. A simple ceremony performed with reverence and respect can bring wonderful results. Simple rays of hope, such as things like a ‘Candle’ can bring, will remind you of or give you spiritual and moral strength. Try lighting a candle and affirming your intentions with a youthful attitude and watch things change for the better. Indeed, you may find yourself entering realms that you have only imagined or not truly dreamt possible. You may be ‘Gaining a Sense of the Great 'Other World’. Proclaiming a level of devotion to a person, situation or task can reaffirm that commitment and take it to deeper levels. If you feel that you are burdened by responsibilities, take heart and adopt a sincere and uncomplicated attitude to what you have to do. There’s purity of heart and motive available.
Keywords: Simple ideals. Ceremonies that are pure and uncomplicated. Affirming intention to the path. The light of consciousness. Shining a light that brings understanding of things on the spiritual level. Spiritualist meetings. Feeling overwhelmed. Enlightenment. Wide-eyed innocence and wonder. Sexual experiments leading to transcendence. Potency. Devotion to ritual. Expansion of psychic talents.
The Caution: Naive reliance on insincere promises. Feeling like someone is too young (or too old) to be of any worth. False feelings of reverence and enlightenment. Placebos. Hallucinogens.
It's interesting to note that there are several 'child' Symbols in this chart; there is a theme going on around children, childhood, innocence and youthfulness.
Although this new Moon has some difficult placements, it is supported by good aspects to Jupiter and Pluto, which can bring about a greater sense of personal power. Also, perhaps the 'powers that be' are finally beginning to listen…. although the cynic in me says why would they? Still, a noise has to be made about the inequities that exist around us. So, lighting that candle may be the way forward, especially as Pluto, the ruler of this Scorpio new Moon, is on a degree that speaks about going into mysterious places or journeys. Pluto is on Capricorn 6: Ten Logs Lie Under An Archway Leading To Darker Woods. What is the journey that you're on? Do you know where you're heading? Do you have a 'light' to shine in or on the 'darkness'?
Keywords: Journeys into the unknown. Getting past the past. Tenacity, stamina and energy preservation. Things to consider before moving deeper. Thresholds, ‘Archways’, entrances. Dark forests. The unknown and the “unknowable”. Delving into the subconscious. Memories that lead into deep or strange places. Gateways. Fallen trees.
The Caution: Fear of the untrodden path. Being afraid to make a move. Things blocked or obstructed. Getting lost in something and not knowing how to get out. Looking for directions that are obscure or concealed.
Jupiter, the planet that wants abundance, expansion, success and the good things in life (but can also warn of excesses like too much spending, debt, eating, overdoing things, etc), is smack opposite this new Moon, which can bring some light relief and positivity to situations. It's on Taurus 6: A Bridge Being Built Across A High Narrow Gorge.
Keywords: Overcoming distance and separation. Endeavoring to build continuity. Solving problems with creative solutions. Bridging emotional chasms. Spanning gaps. Breaking down barriers. Structures spanning distances between places or people. Conquering time and space barriers. Physical limitations overcome. Taking one step at a time. Avoiding looking down.
The Caution: Taking the long way round to avoid asking for help or using shortcuts to cut across the real issue. Only seeing the risks, not the solutions to problems. The fear of establishing connections. The pervading sense that it could all fall through at any moment. Extreme sports.
Indeed, along with the new Moon in Scorpio, there's a sense of 'the shadow' arising – whether it's our own or society's. Further, we might be asking if we're starring in our own version of the movie Ground Hog Day. This is shown by the karmic Moon's north node on Sagittarius 15: The Ground Hog Looking For Its Shadow On Ground Hog Day.
Keywords: Looking back, reading the signs. Divination and other systems of inquiry. Seeing society as being to blame. People having a good look at how they seem to others. Wondering how others perceive you and picture you. Prophets that can tell the “weather” ahead of time. Predictions. Prognosticating. Welcoming an early spring. Scrutinizing objectives and possible outcomes. Looking to nature for clues.
The Caution: Being scared to act without some message of confirmation. People (or society) looking for someone else to blame for conditions. Relying on the same solutions without consideration of changes. Blizzards and the cold.
The karmic Moon's south node is on Gemini 15: Two Dutch Children Talking And Studying Their Lessons Together. Do you have people that you can share your thoughts, plans and lessons with?
Keywords: Sharing of innocence and carefree thoughts and ideals. Exchanging views with like-minded individuals. Simplicity. Sense of companionship. Communication. Best friends. Having the right teacher. Learning and studying. Conversations that illuminate issues. Speaking many languages. Gossiping.
The Caution: Failing to communicate in depth. Unsophisticated viewpoints. Excluding others as “unworthy”. Societal or racial prejudice. “Hearing voices” that don’t make sense. Not hearing the opinions of others to further understand how the world works. Foreign languages that exclude others.
The above reflects the issues to do with the Occupy Wall Street protests. In the days leading up to the new Moon, the south node has been on Gemini 16: A Woman Activist On A Platform In An Emotional Speech Dramatizing Her Cause and the north node has been on Sagittarius 16: Sea Gulls Fly Around A Ship Looking For Food. FOX hacks and shrills and shills such as Bill O'Reilly have been scathing about the protesters; they should "get a job", "wash" and "stop looking for handouts", all while they are getting their enormous salaries and they, no doubt, and others are rorting the system. I once said to my good friend Rick Levine that here in Australia we don't have guns and we don't sue (by and large, this is true compared to the US). Rick answered "how do you guys make money?" – which had me laughing. Ah, the Ground Hog!
Saturn, too right now, can speak of 'getting handouts', although of course, that's not the entire meaning. It also shows helping others, being caring and giving. With Saturn here, many may feel like they could do with a break, receive a caring gesture or trust that they are going to be looked after. The Symbol is Libra 22: A Child Giving Birds A Drink At A Fountain.
Keywords: Enjoyment experienced in nourishing simple souls. The need for water. Simple pleasures. Innocence. Birdbaths. Fountains. Water. Innocent reaching out to others. Taking time out for others. Spontaneous gifts. Moments of innocence, spontaneity and fun. Putting aside your own needs. Stopping to help others. Enjoying interactions with people, birds or animals.
The Caution: Looking for recognition for small deeds. Being condescending to people. Always feeling like you have to look after others, whether they are big or small. Interfering with nature. Being naive. Feeling that one is the font of everything. Expecting handouts.
Mercury and Venus are travelling closely together through two very interesting degrees. Issues to do with doing the right thing and protecting the underdog range through to generally going AWOL and taking unfair advantage of the innocent. Mercury is on Scorpio 21: Obeying His Conscience, A Soldier Resists Orders.
Keywords: Personal morality. Doing what one’s conscience dictates. Going against the status quo. Doing the unexpected. Going by the promptings of the inner voice. The consequences of having a conscience. Not coming home. People clinging to each other. Love that restrains.
The Caution: Displaying cowardice or a lack of courage to act. Not doing what one is expected to do. ‘Going over the top’ in a wild and crazy way. Going AWOL. Being the one who lets everyone down. Court Martials. Antisocial behavior. Anarchists. Being “uncommitted” or “unavailable”. Choosing play instead of duty. Goofing off.
Venus is on Scorpio 22: Hunters Protected By Heavy Clothing Are Shooting Wild Ducks. Issues here have to do with feeling safe, secure and protected (excuse my tautology) and not having to worry about being taken advantage of, or taken out.
Keywords: Satiating one’s aggressive desires. Being able to hit the mark. Putting up with violence in one’s life, whether physical, mental, spiritual or emotional. Road, and other, types of rage. The armed services and their responsibilities. War. Terrorism in its many forms. Camouflage. Being an armed force. Armaments.
The Caution: Exploitation of those who are more vulnerable. Taking unfair advantage of the innocent or the less experienced. Feeling like a sitting duck. Nowhere to run or hide. Hormones running rampant. Mindless violence. War crimes tribunals. Gang warfare. Indiscriminate actions.
Putting the Soldier Going AWOL degree together with the Hunters After Wild Ducks, we may be examining our conscience to see what want to accept in our lives and what we don't. There can be a need to stand up for what you want, regardless of how some others are going to take it. Although there can be wonderful outcomes with these placements of Mercury and Venus, there can also be some odd behaviours. Some 'hurt and maim' others in very obvious ways, whilst others do it with a form of camouflage = Protected By Heavy Clothing. Staying true to one's self if key to the good.
One may wonder if their message is getting through or whether they are accomplishing what they set out to do. Exactly squaring Mercury and Venus is Mars on Leo 22: A Carrier Pigeon Fulfilling Its Mission. What is your mission? Are you still back there at Ground Hog Day? Lines can become blurred and replaced by new realities over the coming weeks as Mars and Neptune do a little opposition dance. What is it that's thought or said that is blocked from getting through?
Neptune is helping us to give birth to ourselves in brand new ways. The Symbol is Aquarius 29: A Butterfly Emerging From A Chrysalis.
Keywords: Slow building of confidence. Coming out into a fuller participation in the bigger picture. Growing up and out. Emerging from the dark. Leaving yesterday behind. Becoming more and more beautiful. Finding one’s feet or wings. Metamorphosis. Huge changes in the works. Giving up struggling. The drama of new life unfolding.
The Caution: Failing to allow changes to be experienced. Feeling like one will never “arrive”. Struggling to emerge ahead of time. Feeling confined. Being tied to the past. Rushing leading to disorientation or injury.
This new Moon is providing an opportunity to go deeper and yet become lighter; to plumb some depths and somehow skim the surface. Lighting a candle looks set to take many into a deeper sense of the great 'other world'.
