The sun unleashes its biggest flare of the year

Excerpt from dailytimes.com.pk

The sun has unleashed its most powerful flare of the year causing radio blackouts throughout the Pacific region.

The enormous X-class solar flare peaked at 6:11pm ET yesterday from a sunspot called Active Region 2339 (AR2339).

Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation that, when intense enough, can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel - and scientists say they could get more powerful in the future.

This latest flare is classified as an X2.7. X-class denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength.

Despite the recent radio blackouts, scientists say the flare is unlikely to cause any further major issues here on Earth.

‘Given the impulsive nature of this event, as well as the source location on the eastern limb of the sun, we are not expecting a radiation storm at Earth,’ scientists with the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) in Boulder, Colorado.

‘We will be on the lookout for new imagery from the Nasa Soho [Solar and Heliospheric Observatory] mission to determine if there was an associated coronal mass ejection (CME) with this event,’ they added.

‘Given the same logic above, however, we do not expect there to be one that would impact Earth.’

Yesterday Kazunari Shibata, an astrophysicist from Kyoto University in Japan, said the sun has the potential to unleash a flare of such a magnitude that it would be larger than anything humans have ever seen.

At the Space Weather Workshop in Colorado, Shibata said ‘superflares,’ that contain energy 1,000 times larger than what we have seen could be on their way.

He said there is evidence of this happening every 800 to 5,000 years on Earth,

Scientists say such a solar ‘super-storm’ would pose a ‘catastrophic’ and ‘long-lasting’ threat to life on Earth.

A superflare would induce huge surges of electrical currents in the ground and in overhead transmission lines, causing widespread power outages and severely damaging critical electrical components.

The largest ever solar super-storm on record occurred in 1859 and is known as the Carrington Event, named after the English astronomer Richard Carrington who spotted the preceding solar flare.

This massive CME released about 1022 kJ of energy - the equivalent to 10 billion Hiroshima bombs exploding at the same time - and hurled around a trillion kilos of charged particles towards the Earth at speeds of up to 3000 km/s.

However, its impact on the human population was relatively benign as our electronic infrastructure at the time amounted to no more than about 124,000 miles (200,000 km) of telegraph lines.

Nasa has also released incredible footage showing the sun unleashing a huge lick of plasma that increased the star’s visible hemisphere by almost half.

The solar filament, which exploded on April 28 and 29, was suspended above the sun due to strong magnetic fields that pushed outwards.

Solar astronomers around the world had their eyes on this unusually large filament and kept track as it erupted.

Nasa’s animation involves images taken from the orbiting Solar and Heliospheric Observatory using its Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph.

The diameter of the animation is about 30 million miles (45 million km) at the distance of the sun, or half of the diameter of the orbit of Mercury.

The white circle in the centre of the round disk represents the size of the sun, which is being blocked by the telescope in order to see the fainter material around it.

High School students spots relic of ancient sun with super wide orbit

Pulsars are types of neutron stars; the dead relics of massive stars. What sets pulsars apart from regular neutron stars is that they’re highly magnetized, and rotating at enormous speeds.

Excerpt from uncovercalifornia.com

A Pulsar with the widest orbit around a neutron star has been discovered by a team of high school students and the discovery has been confirmed by astronomers. High School students from many states who participated in NSF-funded educational outreach program have found the pulsar after analyzing data from Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT).

In a research paper accepted by the Astrophysical Journal, lead author Joe Swiggum, a graduate student in physics and astronomy at West Virginia University in Morgantown, said, “Pulsars are some of the most extreme objects in the universe. The students' discovery shows one of these objects in a really unique set of circumstances.”

The object has been codenamed PSR J1930-1852 by astronomers. It was discovered in 2012 by Cecilia McGough from Strasburg High School in Virginia and De'Shang Ray from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Baltimore, Maryland.

The discovery of a pulsar with extra wide orbit could help in understanding the concepts behind binary neutron star systems. Nearly 10 percent of known pulsars are in binary systems with most of them orbiting white dwarf companion stars. The Pulsar has been found with the widest separation from the other star in the binary neutron system.

During Pulsar Search Collaboratory (PSC) workshop in summer, students who are interested in analyzing survey data collected by Green Bank Telescope (GBT), spend weeks in checking data plots and searching for unique signatures of pulsars.

The Pulsar Search Collaboratory is a joint venture between the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and West Virginia University which offers real research opportunity to students.

12,400 Year Old High-Altitude Settlement Found in Andes

Excerpt from
news.discovery.com

The oldest-known evidence of humans living at extremely high altitudes has been unearthed in the Peruvian Andes, archaeologists say.

The sites — a rock shelter with traces of Ice Age campfires and rock art, and an open-air workshop with stone tools and fragments — are located nearly 14,700 feet (4,500 meters) above sea level and were occupied roughly 12,000 years ago.

The discovery, which is detailed today (Oct. 23) in the journal Science, suggests ancient people in South America were living at extremely high altitudes just 2,000 years after humans first reached the continent.

The findings also raise questions about how these early settlers physically adapted to sky-high living.

"Either they genetically adapted really, really fast — within 2,000 years — to be able to settle this area, or genetic adaptation isn't necessary at all," said lead study author Kurt Rademaker, who was a University of Maine visiting assistant professor in anthropology when he conducted the study.

After years of searching around the plateau, the researchers found a rock shelter with two alcoves, ceilings blackened with soot and walls decorated with rock art. The site also showed evidence of burnt detritus from ancient people's campsites. The rock shelter was used for thousands of years, starting around 12,400 years ago, and may have been a temporary base camp where herders sheltered from the rain, Rademaker said.

Denisa: Self Love

SELF LOVE
oh....dear one
the days of seeking are over...
you are the one you have been seeking...
going to workshops...
following this guru or that master
this or that....
all of it is "over"
there is only one journey...
~the journey within~

the journey of self love
where you discover every belief
born of a thought of separation
from that which I AM
that creates effects that you would
experience that seem unlike love...
how does one heal those appearances??
with your own self-love...
you are the lotus
who allows its petals
to open and bathe in the
light of its own Self love...
drinking in the sunlight of love...
wrapping  your petals of the lotus
that you are
in your own Self Love...
allowing love itself
to dissolve all the effects
birthed from a silly belief
that you are not now one
with that which I AM...
yet...dear one...as the powerful creator
you are
all the effects of that thought
surround you...
none of them are the truth about you
if they do not reflect the love..
the radiance of that which you truly are...
yes.....only love heals...
love is what you are seeking
but the seeking has been a game
of the ego...
you already are love...
you are the divinity you long for...
to rediscover that is to
bring all of your self
to your Self
allowing that very Self
to dissolve every boundary...
~every gap~
between that which I AM
and that which you think you are...
you see
from where i abide...
from the view at the top
~there is no gap~...!!!!!!
there is only ONE....
peace be with you always....
denisa
if you would like to be added to this list
simply send me an email...
touch a heart this day...
feel free to pass this along...
i can only share that which i experience
and that experience is what is shared here
with you...for you...as you...

Realignment: Find the one action that does it all

Last week I shared an exercise you can use when you get your buttons pushed (or to re-center yourself when you feel off track). You can find it here. This week I want to focus on the last part of the exercise - the final sentence stem to be completed:

The best actions for me to take to get back in alignment with my Highest Self are...

The ideas generated by this sentence stem are the most important of all. Think about it. When you know exactly (and specifically) what you need to do to return to a productive and healthy state of mind, you increase your chances of behaving in self-affirming ways. When this happens, life gets better - quickly. You eat better; you make nourishing rest a priority; you become truthful in your relationships; you feel confident enough to ask directly for what you want or need; and you create a state of balance in your life that supports your emotional and physical wellbeing. Sounds good to me!

Here are some examples we received from our Facebook Fan Page last week.

When you feel out of alignment with your Highest Self, you could:

Stop, close your eyes, and take ten deep breaths

Move your body immediately

Write one page about how you feel in a journal

List ten things you feel grateful for

Help someone in need

Pet or play with your cat or dog

Take a nap

Listen to inspirational music

Pray

Write down ten positive affirmations

Find something to laugh at

Read something inspirational

Meditate

Make a cup of tea and take a time out

Get out into nature

Have a good cry

Once you have several ideas of what you might do, it's time to take this exercise one step further. Think about this: If you had to choose ONE powerful action that will always realign you with your Highest Self, what one action would it be?

It's a coach's job to challenge clients to think outside the box. The idea that you can identify or create one specific action to turn your life around in a matter of minutes is the kind of challenge I love to take on. I'm working on my action today.

Now it's your turn. Complete the Take Action Challenge below and see what happens this week!

Take Action Challenge

Once you've read through the examples above, write down anything else that occurs to you. Then, take some time to design one specific action that will get you back on track. Be very specific. For example, instead of saying: "Take some quiet time for myself," try, "Go to my bedroom, sit on the bed, close my eyes, and take ten deep breaths." Or, instead of "Count my blessings," how about, "I'll take out a piece of paper and list ten things I feel grateful for and then write five affirmations that relate to what I most want to create in my life."

Once you've identified your one specific, action step, practice using it every day this week. Pretty soon you'll be able to rely on this one behavior to turn any difficult situation around. It will become a trusted support system that gets you into alignment with your Highest Self in no time!

I just LOVE this week's video sent to me by Mokey. It's so inspiring and it makes me want to get out and hug everyone. You'll find it here. Thanks Mokey (call the show ☺)!

Buttons Pushed

Last week I had a conversation with a good friend who shared a smart (and effective) exercise she uses to re-center herself when she gets her buttons pushed. As I listened to her describe the process, I knew I had to share it with you.

The next time you get your buttons pushed and you find yourself fixated on a negative experience, in the middle of a shame attack, or ruminating about something that's upset you, try this. Take out four pieces of paper and put one of the following four sentence stems on the top of each sheet:

1. I know I'm acting in alignment with my Highest Self when I...

2. The things that knock me out of alignment are...

3. When I'm out of alignment, the behaviors I engage in are...

4. The best actions for me to take to get back in line with my Highest Self are...

Once you have each sentence stem listed on a separate piece of paper, set aside twenty minutes to do a "mind dump" for each category. List lots of examples for each one. What do you do when you're at your best? How do you think? What actions do you take? What kinds of situations knock you off track? And then, what habits or behaviors do you engage in that keep you off track and feeling stuck? Finally, what do you do that helps you to re-center so you can get back in alignment with your Highest Self?

I intended to give you examples for each category but, after doing the exercise myself, I discovered that it's better not to have any preconceived ideas. They interfere with the process. So, let yourself go, write down whatever thoughts or ideas come to mind, and when you're done, I'm sure you'll learn something valuable about yourself. I know I did. I'll give you a way to share your experience in this week's Take Action Challenge. Have fun!

Take Action Challenge

Don't wait to get your buttons pushed before doing this exercise. Instead, give yourself the gift of twenty minutes and use what you learn to respond differently the next time you're faced with a challenge. I'll post each individual sentence stem on my facebook page this week and invite you to share your ideas. But, don't look until you've done the exercise yourself . And be sure to use what you learn to keep yourself empowered and on track!

This week's video is of the first woman on Rolling Stone's Guitar God list. I may have shared it long ago in a newsletter, but it's worth seeing again. She's fantastic! If you loved the movie August Rush, you'll recognize the playing style. Enjoy! You'll find it here.
